Australian and Indonesian infantry soldiers take part in Exercise Wirra Jaya 2016 in Darwin

A PARADE and an exchange of gifts between Australian and Indonesian soldiers marked the end of Exercise Wirra Jaya 2016. The bilateral exercise was held over two weeks in the Top End with about 80 infantry soldiers from Jakarta training with their Darwin counterparts.

Acting commander of the 1st Brigade, Colonel Steve D’Arcy, said Wirra Jaya allowed troops from the 5th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment and the Indonesian 203 Battalion to bond, work together and share tactics. Soldiers tackled the obstacle course at Robertson Barracks before taking part in infantry training on the base and at Mount Bundey training area about two hours from Darwin.

“The culminating exercise in the urban training facility saw them work together extremely well and I was very impressed with the level of training they had accomplished,” Colonel D’Arcy said. The exercise finished with a parade on Thursday.
